Samsung QN95B: A Bold Look at the Future of Gaming

The unexpected death of Google’s Stadia has undoubtedly hurt cloud game streaming in 2022. Google opted to end Stadia’s low-resource gaming service in September, despite the fact that it had some very outstanding streaming capabilities. That hasn’t stopped rival Microsoft from innovating with their equivalent Xbox Cloud Gaming beta, either.

Streaming Game Pass content is currently available on smartphones, tablets, and, perhaps most excitingly, a number of Samsung’s newest Neo QLED TVs. Image my amazement when I booted up the display’s Gaming Hub and found both an Xbox app and a Stadia app sitting side by side. I’ve been trying out the 65-inch QN95B particularly, so you can imagine my surprise.

The Stadia app has clearly become a digital paperweight. There is also an Amazon Luna app, but does anyone use that platform for gaming?
A gamepad is all you need to play Xbox games on the TV after pairing an Xbox wireless controller with the QN95B is as easy as it gets. The initial appeal of cloud streaming integration is that an actual Xbox system is not required. The lack of peripherals like an HDMI cable and AC cord for a dedicated gaming box results in a magnificent lack of clutter because all gameplay is delivered to the display remotely.

which has become infamous. Suddenly, you’re using your TV to play a game without any local hardware in sight.
Now, that particular moment’s lunacy is what makes this technological advance so fascinating. I would have believed you if you had told me twenty years ago that I wouldn’t even require a console to play video games in my living room.

have declared that you practise witchcraft. Unfortunately, playing games over the cloud is a much less magical endeavour in practise.
One of the problems is that the resolution is still set to 1080p, which is absurd on a powerful 4K monitor like the QN95B. Additionally, there is still some annoying input lag, which is perhaps the most significant.

While not very bad, it is more apparent in jittery shooters like Halo Infinite and Outriders. An ethernet cable can help, but not significantly. Gaming is what I’d call serviceable over 5 GHz Wi-Fi, especially for games with smaller stakes like Psychonauts 2.
I connected my Xbox Series X after trying out the cloud streaming and was astounded by the dramatic quality difference, which was to be expected.

Even yet, I find that this kind of work is incredibly ambitious, and it’s exciting to imagine where technology will be in five or ten years. Although I picture a future in which consoles are obsolete and we all play games on our TVs via streaming, I believe that day is still quite distant in terms of high-quality experiences.

The QN95B is a fantastic display overall. With this model, Samsung has brought back the One Connect box, which plugs in directly below the screen on the provided metal stand. On this TV, local gaming looks extremely great, and the black levels are fairly good despite some imperfections.

The on-board speakers’ somewhat irritating rattling of the TV’s plastic casing at specific frequencies is the only aspect of the product that I haven’t liked. It was a letdown to see that this issue can be completely avoided by connecting a separate sound bar, which I would suggest doing with almost any panel you might purchase. Again, you really can’t go wrong with another absurdly reliable QLED in 2022.
