British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will lift restrictions on coronavirus plan B, the Telegraph reported on Friday, as government scientists warn of premature abandonment of the plan.

Covid-19 passports and work-from-home guidance in Whitehall are widely expected to be lifted in England from January 26, the report said, adding that some rules on face masks may remain in place.

An announcement could be made as soon as this week, it said.

On Friday, the government released the minutes of a January 7 meeting of the Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies, saying the epidemic was likely to continue to grow across the country.

The group also warned that if current interventions, such as the UK’s Plan B, were reversed, this could lead to an increase in the overall impact of the outbreak on hospitalisations until the peak of infection has passed.

Plan B, launched last month to slow the spread of the Omicron variant, includes ordering people to work from home, wear masks in public and use Covid passes to enter some venues. Johnson said last week that England could withstand Covid-19 infections without shutting down the economy, resisting imposing strict lockdown measures.
