‘we don’t feel safe,’ say Kashmiri Pandits protesting the killing of Rahul Bhat

The outrage over the killing of Rahul Bhat, a Kashmiri Pandit government employee, continues. Members of the Kashmiri Pandit community protested in Srinagar on Saturday, reiterating their demand for security from the J&K government.

“We want to feel safe, and we don’t feel safe here. Move us to a safe location where we can feel secure. For us, nothing has been done “ANI reported that a protester said.

The Kashmiri Pandit protesters braved the scorching heat while holding banners reading “We Want Justice” in response to the terrorist killing of Rahul Bhat inside the Chadoora tehsil office in Budgam on Thursday. Two Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists involved in the killing of Bhat were killed in an encounter in Bandipora, according to the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Bhat was the second Kashmiri Pandit to be killed in the Kashmir valley by terrorists. Another Kashmiri Pandit, Makhan Lal Bindroo, was killed by terrorists in Srinagar in October of last year.

The leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have seen the Kashmiri Pandit community’s rage. When J&K BJP chief Ravinder Raina and other party leaders visited the cremation ground in Jammu to attend Bhat’s funeral, they were reportedly heckled by mourners.
Manoj Sinha, the lieutenant governor of J&K, announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the killing later that day. The L-G also stated that the administration would provide a government job and financial assistance to Bhat’s wife.
