Yogi Adityanath’s “80 vs 20 Fight Now” Remark Month Ahead Of UP Polls

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the election in India’s most populous state an “80-on-20 battle”, a highly controversial comment seen as hinting at religious divisions. BJP’s Yogi Adityanath, citing figures roughly equivalent to the ratio of Hindus to Muslims in UP, will hold parliamentary elections next month.

Yogi Adityanath was attending an event organised by a private news channel in the state capital Lucknow when he was asked about the Brahmin vote in UP.

“The competition has come a long way,” replied the chief minister in saffron robes. “The fight now is 80 to 20,” he added.

“Owaisi said it was 19 percent,” the meeting moderator went on to say. Asaduddin Owaisi leads the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, or AIMIM.

Yogi Adityanath cut short the question by the host.

“80% are people who support nationalism, good governance and development. These people will vote for the BJP, and those who oppose this and supporters of the mafia and criminals, anti-peasants and villages, these 15-20 people will Pick a different path. So in this 80-20 fight, Lotus will show the way,” the chief minister said, referring to the BJP’s election symbol.

For the past few months, the chief minister has been using “abba jaan” or “one who speaks abba jaan”, which is seen as a barb against Muslims and his former Samajwadi party chairman Akhilesh Yadav.
