Android 12L Announced for Tablets, ChromeOS Devices, Foldable Phones: Brings New Taskbar, More Features

Android 12L has been released by Google and is designed for large screens. The new user interface is more refined, with adjustments to notifications, quick settings, lock screen, overview, home screen and other elements.

For example, on display screen sizes exceeding 600dp, the notification bar, lock screen, and other system interfaces use a new two-column layout to take advantage of the extra space on the screen. These two column layouts show more information and are easy to use. System apps are also optimized for Android tablets, foldable devices, and ChromeOS devices.

In a new blog post on October 27th, Google announced the launch of Android 12L for large-screen devices. It will be released early next year, and the technology giant is working with OEM partners to bring new updates. Google confirmed that the Android 12L developer preview version will first land on Lenovo Tab P12 Pro. Although the technology giant is currently focusing on tablets, foldable devices and ChromeOS devices, it plans to open Android Beta registration for Pixel devices later.

Compared with ordinary smart phones, the new Android 12L will use additional space to provide a new UI experience. In addition to the notification and lock screen two-column layout, Android 12L also brings a new taskbar, allowing users to immediately switch to favorite applications. This taskbar also makes the split screen mode easier to discover. With Android 12L, users only need to drag and drop from the taskbar to run the application in split-screen mode.

Google added: “In order to provide a better split-screen mode experience in Android 12 and higher, we help users by automatically enabling all applications to enter split-screen mode, regardless of whether the application is resizable or not.” Android 12L for tablets, foldable devices, and ChromeOS devices also improves compatibility mode to provide users with a better mailbox experience and help apps look better by default.

For manufacturers, Android 12L provides a customizable mailbox to enable mailbox color or processing options, adjust the position of the insertion window, apply custom rounded corners, etc. In addition to the large screen function, it is said that Android 12L also includes some new APIs for developers, as well as new API levels.

Google said: “We have been careful not to introduce any major changes to your application, so we will not require the application to target 12L to meet Google Play’s requirements.”
