Delhi may report 10,000 Covid-19 cases today: Satyendar Jain

Delhi City Health Minister Satyendar Jain stated that Delhi may report as many as 10,000 Covid-19 infections on Wednesday, adding that the daily positive rate in the country’s capital will be close to 10%. “The third wave of Covid-19 has begun,” he said.

The announcement from the Ministry of Health of the Alliance this morning revealed that this development occurred on the day when India had reported 58,097 cases of coronavirus disease in the past 24 hours. In just four days, the number of cases has doubled.

When talking about the genome sequencing of Covid-19 samples, Jain said that it is now impossible to sequence the genomes of all samples. “Only 300-400 samples were sequenced,” he said.

The Minister of Health of Delhi pointed out that at the same time, Covid-19 testing has increased, with approximately 90,000 tests conducted on Tuesday.

Jain said that the Delhi government has instructed private hospitals to increase the number of reserved beds for Covid-19 patients from the previous 10% to 40%. He said that nearly 2% of the beds are occupied by government hospitals. Earlier on Tuesday, the Delhi Minister of Health confirmed that the capital would not be locked down; however, due to a surge in cases, a curfew was imposed on weekends. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) met on Tuesday and subsequently decided to implement a weekend curfew.

According to the latest available data, as the Omicron epidemic swept the capital, Delhi reported 5,481 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday. A total of 3 patients died of the virus, and the death toll reached 25,113. The positive rate of cases in the city was 8.37%, the highest level since 8.42% on May 17 last year.
