Mamata Banerjee birthday: Leaders wish Bengal CM ‘health and long life’

Today (January 5) is the 67th birthday of Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal and Chairman of Trinamool Congress (TMC). Many leaders and celebrities paid tribute to the politician on this occasion.

“Happy birthday @MamataOfficial Didi. May God bless you with all your happiness, success, health and longevity,” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Twitter. Actor Riteish Deshmukh tweeted, “Happy birthday @MamataOfficial Didi-God bless you with good health and longevity. May you always work hard for the well-being of the people.” Banerjee was born in Kolkata on January 5, 1955. She started her political journey in the mid-1970s when she was 15 years old. She was quickly promoted and became the general secretary of the Mahila Congress, and later the general secretary of the All India Youth Congress.

In 1984, Banerjee was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 8th Lok Sabha becoming one of India’s youngest parliamentarians. After disagreements with the National Congress Party, she founded the Trinamool Parliament in 1997.

Mamata Banerjee has worked with three prime ministers, including PV Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Dr. Manmohan Singh. She has served as Union Minister in the governments of the National League for Democracy (NDA) and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), and has held positions in human resources development, youth affairs and sports, women and children development, coal and mining, and railways.

She graduated from the University of Kolkata with a master’s degree in law and literature.

Banerjee became the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the first time in 2011, ending the 34-year rule of the Left Front, one of the world’s longest-serving governments.

The head of TMC recognized her governance as the rule of the three Ms-“Ma”, “Mati” and “Manush” (mother, soil and people). It later became the iconic slogan of Banerjee and her party.

Nandigram, Singur and slogans were used by TMC as a weapon against the left, which enabled the party to win the election battle.

The Chief Minister of West Bengal is also a self-taught painter, poet and writer. She has authored more than 100 books.
