Delhi’s air quality ‘poor’; mercury may touch 26 degrees Celsius
Delhi’s air quality was in the “poor” category on Thursday morning, although mercury was expected to rise to 26 degrees Celsius. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the hourly air quality I (AQI) at 8 a.m. was 272. On Wednesday, the 24-hour average AQI was 272, in the worse category.
An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “fair”, 101 and 200 “fair”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “strong” .
On Wednesday, the United Earth Science Department’s Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research System said the AQI could remain in the “poor” category for several days due to lower wind speeds. “The AQI today (Wednesday) shows ‘poor’. Low wind speeds over the next two days (Thursday and Friday) are likely to reduce ventilation and the AQI is expected to deteriorate to the ‘high end of poor’ or the ‘low end of very poor’.
The AQI should improve over the weekend due to high winds and strong dispersion.
A low of 9 degrees Celsius is expected on Thursday. Wednesday’s low was 9.4C and the high was 25.7C. Temperatures are likely to remain in the same range on Friday. Fog is also expected on Friday morning.
