Amitabh Bachchan recalls how his dad wrote letters to fans, posted them himself

During a time when handwritten letters were popular, Amitabh Bachchan recalled the era and claimed that his father, the renowned writer-poet and philosopher Harivansh Rai Bachchan, used to reply to all of the fan letters he got. The actor also expressed the hope that someday one of the KBC contestants will let him know that they had some of his father’s handwritten letters, at which point he would urge the candidate to give them to him.

“My dad used to send out a tonne of letters to his friends and admirers. He used to write between 50 and 100 letters per day, and he used to reply to each and every letter individually. Small postcards were utilised for his writing, which he would then correctly fold and post by himself. On the most recent episode of KBC 14, Amitabh remarked, “When I used to ask him why he is going back to the post office, he would respond, “I am going to see if the card was sent or not.”

“I am confident that someone in the audience would step up on the programme and tell me that see, I have your dad’s letter that he wrote for me himself,” he continued. I’ll ask him to give me whichever many he has, and I’ll keep them in my home. Obviously, before stealing it, I would give them a copy. He received a lot of responses via letters, and he also published those messages as a book.

Amitabh also mentioned how much he “used to admire” postmen. “The postman was a hero in our time since he or she served as our sole means of communication. He used to just deliver letters to our homes. Amitabh mentioned handwritten letters when a contestant named Jyotirmayee revealed that she works as an Assistant Superintendent of Post and that her husband is also an Assistant Superintendent of the Post Office. We used to respect them a lot and thought of them as proprietary.
