Bailable warrant cancelled against Param Bir Singh, asked to deposit ₹15k

The committee investigating corruption allegations against former Maharashtra State Minister of Interior Anil Deshmukh on Monday cancelled the bailable order against former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh (Parm Bir Singh).

The committee took this step after Singh appeared before Judge Ku Chandiwar during the day. The single-person team further asked the former senior official to deposit 15,000 rupees into the chief minister’s relief fund within a week because he did not show up early.

The committee was established in March this year to investigate the allegations made by Singh against the then Minister of the Interior and the leader of the National Party (NCP).

Singh submitted an affidavit to the committee through his lawyer, stating that he neither had any evidence to show nor did he want to cross-examine any witnesses in the case.

The team earlier fined Singh several times for failing to appear in court and issued a bailable arrest warrant for him. Singh was transferred from the post of police chief in Mumbai in March after the Antilia bombing incident. He claimed that Deshmukh asked the police to collect 1 billion rupees a month from bars and restaurants in the city.

Singh was declared absconded by the court here due to an extortion case. He appeared in public last week six months later and appeared in front of the Mumbai Crime Branch to record his statement.

The Supreme Court has granted him temporary protection from arrest. When Singh appeared in court at the Tana police on Friday, he and other police officials filed an extortion case against him and some other police officials because of a complaint from a local builder. IPS officials face at least five extortion cases in Maharashtra.
