Bhojpuri & Magahi removed as regional languages from Dhanbad, Bokaro after days of stir

The Jharkhand government has withdrawn Bhojpuri and Majahi as regional languages from Bokaro and Dhanbad districts.

In this regard, a new circular signed by the chief secretary was issued late Friday. In it, the government has named “Nagpuri, Urdu, Horta, Kurmari and Bengali” as the regional languages of the two regions only.

According to an article in the Indian Express, the move is the result of days of mass protests in several parts of the state over the inclusion of Bhojpur and Majahi in the Jharkhand Staff Selection Committee (JSSC) Bokaro and Appointment Exam in Dambad Region.

The protests, which reportedly spread in Ranchi and Giridih, began after the Hermant Soren government issued a notice in December on the selection of junior and mid-level candidates through examinations. The notice has listed Bhojpuri and Magahi as regional languages for Dhanbad and Bokaro regions.

According to protesters, very few people in the two regions speak the two languages, and including them in the exam amounts to a “violation of the rights of the locals”, in this case the Adivasi (tribes) and Moolvasis ( non-tribal).
