Covid-19: Delhi govt recommends lifting weekend curfew, sends proposal to LG

The Delhi government on Friday made a recommendation to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal to end the weekend curfew as Covid-19 cases in the capital continue to plummet.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led government has also proposed lifting restrictions on shops and commercial establishments, ending the odd-even system and allowing them to operate throughout the day.

As part of a colour-graded response action plan, the capital has imposed strict restrictions, including a weekend curfew, to check the spread of COVID-19 infections in markets, industries, offices and public transport.

As cases continue to decline, the government is suggesting that private offices may be allowed to call 50% of their staff into the office, rather than the current 100% working from home.

Last week, Delhi Health Minister Satyndar Jain had suggested that the government might consider easing restrictions if Covid-19 cases fell below 15,000.

He later said that while the positivity rate had fallen, it was “not enough for us to ease Covid restrictions”.

The weekend curfew imposed in light of rising Covid-19 cases will be imposed from 10pm today and will last until 5am on Monday unless LG approves the Delhi government’s proposal.

The number of single-day Covid-19 cases in Delhi has dropped in the past 24 hours after as many as 12,306 people tested positive, according to the latest health bulletin data.
