Gavaskar painfully reminds Rohit Sharma of his World Cup injuries following Shubman Gill’s catch in the fifth Test between India and England.

Sunil Gavaskar jogged memories of India’s devastating loss to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final on Thursday while providing commentary during the team’s fifth Test match in Dharamsala. The grief of that loss hasn’t quite subsided. Gavaskar brought up the forgotten November 19th night, when Ben Duckett was dismissed by Shubman Gill after a breathtaking catch.

When Sunil Gavaskar brought up the painful loss of India to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final during his commentary on Thursday’s 5th Test match between India and England in Dharamsala, it rekindled memories of that devastating loss. Gavaskar brought up the unmemorable evening of November 19, when Ben Duckett was dismissed by Shubman Gill after an unbelievable catch.

As everyone cheered, including Gavaskar, Gill ran a considerable distance to get underneath the ball that the England opener mishandled. However, the former captain drew attention to the fact that Gill’s catch was identical to the one made by Travis Head to remove Rohit Sharma in Ahmedabad.

“Catching these is never simple. Reversing course… This reminds me of the World Cup final dismissal of Rohit Sharma. Travis Head caught him in the same way. Check out the teammates’ embrace. They are aware of the difficulty. He reached out, his levers long. What a cricketer, amazing stuff,” Gavaskar exclaimed on television.

England got off to a strong start thanks to Duckett and Zak Crawley, but India went wicketless for nearly eighteen overs before Gill’s catch handed his team a much-needed breakthrough. After a demanding first hour in which Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah produced a series of unplayable deliveries, they had increased the total to 64. But everything changed dramatically with the introduction of Kuldeep Yadav. In an attempt to escape, Duckett attempted to launch himself into the wrist-spinner, but the googly fooled him and caused him to misjudge the timing. In this series, Kuldeep had dismissed Duckett three times.

Gill took out as soon as the ball entered the air, positioning himself to cover, and he continued to watch it through until the very end. India took the lead when Gill, who was running behind, got underneath the delivery with his bucket-like hands. Crawley persisted, reaching his fourth fifty of the innings, but just as it appeared that England would lose by one wicket at lunch, Ollie Pope went out to Kuldeep and was caught off guard, giving the left-armer his second wicket.

R Ashwin, the other spinner for the Indian team, has also come into action as he plays in his 100th Test match. Ashwin bowled six overs for 29 runs following an emotional celebration by the Indian squad, captained by coach Rahul Dravid. Although he was a little pricey, Ashwin was able to generate some opportunities.

Gambhir acknowledges that his “sole regret in seven years of captaincy” is Suryakumar Yadav: “KKR failed to recognise his potential.”

Throughout his incredible career with the Mumbai Indians since 2018, Suryakumar Yadav has become a household name. He has established himself as a vital member of the batting lineup and is seen as the team’s future leader. He was able to establish himself in the Indian white-ball team and get to the top of the IC batting rankings in the format because to his valiant efforts at MI. But before he was let away, Suryakumar was a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders lineup from 2014 to 2017. When former captain Gautam Gambhir reflects on the two IPL titles won by KKR during that time, he named the star player from India his greatest regret.

KKR featured Suryakumar Yadav from 2014 to 2017.

In 2012, Suryakumar began his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians, appearing in just one match before being cut loose the following year. He was signed by KKR in 2014, and he won the championship in his first campaign there. The right-handed batter scored 608 runs in 54 games during his four-year tenure with the team, although the majority of those runs were scored as a lower middle order hitter.

In an interview with Sportskeeda on Monday, Gambhir said that his biggest regret as KKR captain is that he failed to recognise Suryakumar’s ability or his ideal batting position in the lineup.

Finding and showcasing the greatest potential is the responsibility of a leader. If there’s one thing I regret from my seven years as captain, it’s that neither I nor the squad were able to fully utilise Suryakumar Yadav. And combinations were the key to the cause. At No. 3, you may only play one person. As a leader, you also need to consider the other ten players in the starting lineup. Although he was just as excellent at No. 7, he would have been far more effective at No. 3, he said.

Gambhir went on to praise Suruyakumar for being a team player, citing the reason behind his appointment as the team’s vice-captain in 2015.

He was a team player as well. A good player may be anyone, but becoming a team player takes skill. Playing him at No. 6 or 7 or benching him, he was constantly grinning and eager to contribute to the squad. He went on, “That’s why we named him vice captain.”
