Goa imposes night curfew amid surge in Covid cases

With the increase in Covid-19 cases in the coastal state, the Goa government imposed a curfew in the state on Monday. It is said that the curfew order is executed from 11 pm to 6 am every day.

The Goa government also decided to close schools and colleges until January 26. The decision was made by State Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at today’s working group meeting on Covid-19. At the same time, Goa reported 631 new coronavirus cases on Monday, and officials said the positive rate jumped 16% to 26.43%.

On Sunday, the COVID-19 positive rate in Goa was 10.7%, with 388 cases. With the new infection, the total number of cases in Goa on Monday increased to 1,82,201.

To date, Goa has reported five cases of Omicron variants, including four on Monday. The positive rate is the percentage of all coronavirus tests that are actually positive.

Following the surge in cases, the state government decided to close schools and universities until January 26. After chairing the working group meeting earlier today, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told reporters that the government will also impose a curfew in the state.

The official added that as there were no new death reports on Monday, the number of COVID-19 deaths in Goa remained unchanged at 3,523. An official said that after 62 people were discharged during the day, the number of people recovered rose to 1,76,438, leaving Goa with 2,240 active cases.

“Passed 2,387 new tests and the total number of tests conducted in Goa so far reached 16,37,091,” he added.

Bengali actor Partha Sarathi Deb, aged 68, passed away at a Kolkata hospital while undergoing treatment, according to his family.

Partha passed away at 11:50 pm on Friday night due to COPD-related ailments. He had been admitted to state-run M R Bangur hospital for the last month, and his condition worsened over the past week, and he was in the ICU.

Actor Jeet expressed sadness over the loss of colleague and WBAF committee member Partha Sarathi Deb on X, sharing a photo and offering condolences to his bereaved family and friends.

Actress Rupanjana Mitra announced the news on Facebook, writing a lengthy note in Bengali.

Partha, the vice president of the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists Forum, condoled the death of actor Amit Shah and announced that his body would be taken to Technician Studio, a familiar place for him.

The forum is deeply saddened by the actor’s passing and will keep his remains at Technician’s Studio on March 23, where his loved ones, teammates, and well-wishers can pay their last respects.
