India’s Winter Olympic contingent Covid-free after manager tests negative

India’s Winter Olympics contingent manager Mohammad Abbas Wani carried out the last 24 hours a day after testing positive for Covid-19, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said on Thursday. Negative results were returned in two retests.

Wani was found to be positive for Covid-19 when he arrived at the Beijing airport on Wednesday. IOA president Narinder Batra said the officer had now tested negative in the last two tests.

“The manager of the Indian team, Mr. Abbas Vani, tested negative for 2 tests on him in the last 24 hours. Therefore, the entire Indian contingent in Beijing is free of Covid-19,” Batra said.

“Thanks to Mr Harjinder Singh (Head of Delegation), Indian Embassy in China and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for taking care of everyone.”

Vani was part of a six-man Indian delegation to the Winter Olympics, with Jammu and Kashmir skier Arif Khan the only athlete from the country to qualify.

Arif will compete in slalom and giant slalom during the Olympics from February 4 to 20.

The contingent also included Alpine Coach Ludar Chand Thakur, Technician Puran Chand and Team Officer Roop Chand Negi.

An asymptomatic Varney was isolated in his hotel room before retesting confirmed he was not infected.
