Mayank added to squad for WI ODIs, BCCI issues statement post Covid outbreak

The BCCI has issued an official statement confirming that seven members of the Indian cricket team (four players and three support staff) have tested positive for Covid-19 and informed that the opener Mayank Agarwal has been added to the 18-member squad. In India: A six-match limited match against West Indies will begin with the first ODI on Sunday, February 6.

“The All India Senior Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to India’s ODI squad after seven members including three players (senior men) of the Indian team tested positive for Covid-19 after three rounds of RT-PCR tests response,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“Members are required to report the upcoming three ODI and T20I series matches against West Indies in Ahmedabad on 31 January 2022. Each member is also required to report to Ahmedabad at the start of the trip RT-PCR test at home prior to the trip, which was carried out after testing negative.”

The release further stated that Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad were indeed the three players who tested positive, as well as standby bowler Navdeep Saini. Fielding coach T Dilip, safety liaison officer B Lokesh and sports massage therapist Rajeev Kumar also contracted the virus.

“RT-PCR tests of opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and fast bowler Navdeep Saini (alternate) on Monday (Jan 31) returned positive results. RT by Fielding Coach T. Dilip and Safety Liaison Officer B. Lokesh – PCR tests conducted on Monday (31 January) have returned positive results, the release mentioned.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad tested positive for RT-PCR on Tuesday (Feb 1). He came back negative in the first round of tests on Monday. Shreyas Iyer and sports massage therapist Rajeev Kumar on Wednesday (Feb 1) Both RT-PCR tests performed 2nd) returned positive results. Both tested negative in the first two rounds of testing.”

The Covid batsmen will now be quarantined for at least seven days with little chance of an ODI match against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This development is a bummer for Dhawan fans and followers, as the left-handed batsman is only part of the ODI squad, not the T20Is. The same goes for Gaikwad, who, despite being part of the South African Indian ODI squad, didn’t get a match after he ignited the Vijay Hazare tournament.

The ODI in Ahmedabad will be held behind closed doors, while the three ODIs to be held at Eden Gardens will witness 75% attendance of the Kolkata audience.

Gambhir acknowledges that his “sole regret in seven years of captaincy” is Suryakumar Yadav: “KKR failed to recognise his potential.”

Throughout his incredible career with the Mumbai Indians since 2018, Suryakumar Yadav has become a household name. He has established himself as a vital member of the batting lineup and is seen as the team’s future leader. He was able to establish himself in the Indian white-ball team and get to the top of the IC batting rankings in the format because to his valiant efforts at MI. But before he was let away, Suryakumar was a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders lineup from 2014 to 2017. When former captain Gautam Gambhir reflects on the two IPL titles won by KKR during that time, he named the star player from India his greatest regret.

KKR featured Suryakumar Yadav from 2014 to 2017.

In 2012, Suryakumar began his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians, appearing in just one match before being cut loose the following year. He was signed by KKR in 2014, and he won the championship in his first campaign there. The right-handed batter scored 608 runs in 54 games during his four-year tenure with the team, although the majority of those runs were scored as a lower middle order hitter.

In an interview with Sportskeeda on Monday, Gambhir said that his biggest regret as KKR captain is that he failed to recognise Suryakumar’s ability or his ideal batting position in the lineup.

Finding and showcasing the greatest potential is the responsibility of a leader. If there’s one thing I regret from my seven years as captain, it’s that neither I nor the squad were able to fully utilise Suryakumar Yadav. And combinations were the key to the cause. At No. 3, you may only play one person. As a leader, you also need to consider the other ten players in the starting lineup. Although he was just as excellent at No. 7, he would have been far more effective at No. 3, he said.

Gambhir went on to praise Suruyakumar for being a team player, citing the reason behind his appointment as the team’s vice-captain in 2015.

He was a team player as well. A good player may be anyone, but becoming a team player takes skill. Playing him at No. 6 or 7 or benching him, he was constantly grinning and eager to contribute to the squad. He went on, “That’s why we named him vice captain.”
