Missionaries of Charity itself requested SBI to freeze all bank accounts: Centre

The Federal Ministry of the Interior said on Monday that Mother Teresa’s application for renewal of the registration of the Foreign Donation Supervision Act was rejected on December 25 because it did not meet the eligibility requirements of the 2010 FCRA and the 2011 Foreign Donation Regulations. According to a press release, the National Bank of India told the Federal Ministry of the Interior that the charity missionaries themselves had issued a request to the bank to freeze their accounts.

After the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee claimed that all bank accounts of MoC were frozen by the center, the ministry issued a statement. Banerjee said that all 22,000 patients and employees were deprived of food and medicine, adding that “humanitarian efforts cannot be compromised.”

The Ministry of the Interior stated that it has not received a request or amendment application from the MoC to review this refusal to renew. The registration of charity missionaries registered under FCRA vide registration number 147120001 is valid until October 31, 2021. The Ministry stated that the validity period was subsequently extended to December 31, 2021, and that the renewal applications of other FCRA associations are awaiting renewal. The central government stated that when considering the Ministry of Commerce’s renewal application, it noticed some unfavorable inputs. “Considering these recorded inputs, the Ministry of Commerce’s application for renewal was not approved. MoC’s FCRA registration is valid until December 31, 2021,” the press release stated.

“MHA has not frozen any of MoC’s accounts. The State Bank of India has informed that MoC itself has made a request to SBI to freeze its accounts,” it added.
