Filmmaker Leena Manimekalai’s Kaali Poster Tweet is deleted by Twitter

In response to “a legal demand,” the social media site Twitter has taken down director Leena Manimekalai’s tweet about her contentious documentary “Kaali.”

The Toronto-based director released the “Kaali” poster, which showed the title character smoking and clutching an LGBTQ flag, in the aforementioned tweet from July 2 that was quoted above. The original tweet was replaced with a notification that said, “This Tweet from @LeenaManimekali has been withheld in India in compliance to a court demand.”

When the tweet was removed by the microblogging platform is unknown. Tuesday saw the filing of separate FIRs against Manimekalai over the divisive poster by the Delhi Police and the Uttar Pradesh Police. Further, following concerns from leaders of the Hindu community in Canada about the “disrespectful depiction” of Hindu gods, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa urged the Canadian authorities to remove all “provocative material” associated with the movie.

“Kaali” was on display at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto as a part of the “Under the Tent” initiative. Manimekalai, who had been attacked for the poster, had declared on Monday that she would keep speaking out without fear as long as she lived. “Nothing is lost on my end. I want to have the freedom to speak my mind without fear for as long as I have the ability to do so. If my life is the price for it, I’ll pay it “She responded to a story about the dispute in a tweet written in Tamil. In order to comprehend the significance of the poster, the filmmaker also recommended viewers to view the documentary.

Family Star review

The Hindustan Times’ review of the movie Family Star, starring Vijay Deverakonda and directed by Parasuram Petla, suggests that the film struggles to make a mark or entertain, with issues reminiscent of Geetha Govindam (2018). The film tests patience and fails to maintain interest as it progresses.

The review criticizes the plot of Family Star, stating that it is thin and defies logic, making it difficult to enjoy. It also suggests that the film’s portrayal of middle-class life is caricaturish, as if it was written by someone unfamiliar with the realities of such a life.
