Subedaar teaser: ‘Chacha’ Anil Kapoor ready for action; internet says it gives ‘Balbir Singh in early days’

Subedaar teaser: The first glimpse of Suresh Triveni’s action thriller was released on the occasion of lead actor Anil Kapoor’s 68th birthday.
Subedaar first look: Anil Kapoor is surely ageing in reverse. On the occasion of his 68th birthday, the makers of his next, Suresh Triveni’s action thriller Subedaar, unveiled the first look teaser. Needless to say, the actor not only looks younger, but also ready for some solid action. (Also Read: Fans think Shah Rukh Khan looks like Anil Kapoor in this video from a Delhi event. Do you see the resemblance?)

Subedaar first look

Prime Video India dropped the first look teaser of Subedaar on Tuesday morning. In the glimpse, we can see Anil, looking gritty in a striped white shirt, beige trousers, and slippers. He’s inside a dark room, which has been locked from the inside. A group of men can be heard on the outside, trying to barge into the room, threatening the “subedaar” and “chacha” (uncle) in the process. Anil, however, looks ready to take them on as he sits on a wooden chair right in front of the door. He signals holding a gun, before the weapon appears in his hands out of thin air. He then loads the gun, waiting for the attackers to break in and confront him. As the camera pans out of the room, Anil’s voiceover declares, “Fauji taiyar (the soldier is ready).”

Internet reacts

The internet was left impressed by the first glimpse of Anil’s next action thriller. An Instagram user commented, “Damn bro!” Another wrote, “Banger (fire emojis).” “Super kadak (strong)!” read a third comment, while a fourth one stated, “Happy Birthday (balloon and red heart emojis) what a swag & always remarkable (red heart emojis).” A person also said, “Feels like a South Movie for me but looks promising need a full trailer (take a bow emoji).”

An Instagram user even compared Anil’s stance and look to that of Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) from Gurmeet Singh’s popular Prime Video India crime thriller show Mirzapur. And another one claimed Anil wielding a gun in Subedaar looks and feels like what his character Balbir Singh from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s 2023 blockbuster family crime drama Animal would have been in his “early days.”

Khan, the most successful actor in Bollywood, made ₹25000 cr at the box office, surpassing the combined earnings of Shah Rukh, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan.

With a cumulative gross of ₹25000 crore at the box office, this ‘non superstar’ may just be the most successful Indian actor ever. But there is a small catch.
It is a testament to their domination of Hindi cinema that the three Khans have starred in most of the highest-grossing Bollywood films over the last three decades. One or the other of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan have led 90% of the biggest films in Hindi cinema during this period. So one would assume that Bollywood’s ‘most successful’ Khan would be either of these three. But that depends on what metric one chooses for success. If it is simply box office collections globally, then a fourth name – a rather surprising one at that – beats these three superstars. Bollywood’s most successful Khan

As lead stars, there is no denying Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan’s box office pull. In their career, they are the top draw at the ticket window. Shah Rukh’s films have collectively earned just under ₹9000 crore at the box office worldwide, while Salman ( ₹7000 crore) and Aamir ( ₹6500 crore) follow closely behind. Together, their films (including overlaps like Karan Arjun and Andaz Apna Apna) have earned ₹22,000 crore. But the figure is less than what the films featuring the late Irrfan Khan have earned. Courtesy of his stellar Hollywood career that allowed him to star in many big blockbusters, Irrfan was able to leap past his more popular Bollywood colleagues. In a career that spanned over 25 years, Irrfan’s Indian films earned just over ₹2000 crore. But the bulk of his box office earnings came from his Hollywood releases, which have a combined gross of over $2.5 billion ( ₹22,500 crore).

However, one might argue that the OG Khans still win this as most of their films had them in the lead, while Irrfan was largely playing the supporting role to bigger stars like Chris Pratt (Jurassic World), Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man), and Tom Hanks (Inferno).

Irrfan Khan’s stellar Hollywood career

Irrfan made a name for himself in Hindi cinema in the early 2000s with critically acclaimed performances in Haasil, Maqbool, Life in a Metro, and Paan Singh Tomar. His breakthrough in the West came with a supporting role in Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. This led to small but significant roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Life of Pi (2012), Jurassic World (2015), and Inferno (2016). His last English language film, Puzzle, starred him in the lead role alongside Kelly Macdonald. Irrfan was diagnosed with cancer in 2018, to which he succumbed in 2020. He was 53.
