Afghan leaders, civilians criticise Khalilzad’s ‘destructive role’ in Afghanistan

The resignation of former US peace envoy Khalilzad on Monday caused a strong reaction from Afghan politicians and citizens.

In 2018, he became the U.S. special envoy for the Afghan reconciliation issue, leading the U.S. team to negotiate with the Taliban. In 2020, after long negotiations, he and the Taliban signed a peace agreement based on the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

Khalilzad stepped down on Monday and said that he was “sorrowful” that the Afghans failed to use the opportunity of peace to end the 40-year war. Many Afghan politicians and citizens call Khalilzad’s mission a “failure.” Former intelligence chief Rahmatullah Nabil tweeted: “Finally, this con man was expelled from the scene after dragging Afghanistan into an irreversible catastrophe!”

Sayed Ishaq Gilani, the leader of the National Solidarity Movement of Afghanistan, said. Now the people Suffering, and all this is the result of Khalilzad’s work. ” “Khalilzad worked for the benefit of the United States.

He destroyed the relationship between Afghanistan and other countries. His mission in Afghanistan also failed,” said Shuja Hassan Mohsini, a university lecturer. . The Islamic Emirate also stated that Khalilzad did not do anything useful for the Afghan people. The spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, Anaamullah Samangani, said: “Khalilzad came to Afghanistan to advance the orders of the United States and did not do anything useful for the Afghan people.” Some residents of Kabul also criticized Khalilzad for being involved in the Afghan crisis. “Khalilzad betrayed the Afghan people.

He brought Afghanistan into crisis,” said Naqib, a Kabul resident. “Khalilzad’s mission failed. To the Afghan people, he is evil. The Afghan people are experiencing the current bad situation caused by Khalilzad’s activities,” said Kabul resident Mohamed Naqib.
