After Biden-led summit, China calls US democracy ‘weapon of mass destruction’

Following the democratic summit organized by the United States, China referred to American democracy as a “weapons of mass destruction” on Saturday. The summit was designed to support like-minded allies in front of authoritarian regimes.

Countries such as China, Russia and Hungary were excluded from the two-day virtual summit and angrily accused US President Joe Biden of inciting ideological differences during the Cold War era.

“‘Democracy’ has long become a’weapon of mass destruction’ used by the United States to interfere with other countries,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said in an online statement that also accused the United States of “inciting’color revolutions’ overseas.” .

The Ministry also claimed that the summit was organized by the United States with the purpose of “drawing a clear line of ideological prejudice, instrumentalizing and weaponizing democracy… (and) inciting division and confrontation.”

On the contrary, Beijing vowed to “resolutely resist and oppose all kinds of pseudo-democracies.”

Before the summit, China stepped up its propaganda campaign and criticized the corruption and failure of American democracy. Instead, it touted its own version of “all-process people’s democracy” in a white paper released last week, aimed at providing legitimacy to the ruling Communist Party. The party has become increasingly authoritarian under the leadership of Chairman Xi Jinping.

Although the United States has repeatedly denied that there will be another cold war with China, in recent years, tensions have escalated between the world’s two largest economies on issues such as trade and technological competition, human rights, Xinjiang and Taiwan.

The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned two senior Chinese officials on Friday for violating human rights in Xinjiang and blacklisted the Chinese artificial intelligence monitoring company Shangtang Technology for its facial recognition technology targeting Uyghur ethnic minorities.

Taiwan is a democratic and autonomous island claimed by China, and being invited to the US summit is obviously a neglect of its larger neighbors. Said to only recognize China.

The announcement leaves Taiwan with only 14 diplomatic allies. In response, the US State Department called on “all countries that value democratic systems” to “expand contact” with the island.
