Amid Covid-19 surge in Delhi-NCR, home secretary to chair review meeting today
A Ministry of the Interior official familiar with the developments said that the coalition’s Minister of the Interior, Ajay Bara, will host a review meeting on the rising coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in Delhi’s NCR on Thursday night. It is worth noting that several states have issued warnings about the new, highly-spreading Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which is said to be highly mutated and is currently the main culprit for a large number of infections in the country.
According to the latest news from the Alliance Ministry of Health, India reported nearly 500 new Omicron infections on Thursday, as the total number of this latest Covid-19 variant reached 2,630. The Ministry of Health update further shows that the new variant of the coronavirus has now spread to 26 states.
Maharashtra continues to be the main contributor with 797 Omicron cases, followed by Delhi (465), Rajasthan (236), Kerala (234), Karnataka (226) and Gujarat (204).
The capital, Delhi, has decided to impose a weekend curfew. During the weekend curfew, the city does not allow non-essential activities, and according to the latest order of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), government offices (prohibition of basic services) have implemented home work for employees, while private offices have a business hour of 50 Percent of capacity. The number of new Covid-19 infections in the country every day also soared on Thursday, as more than 90,000 people tested positive for the viral disease in the past 24 hours (90,928 to be precise), much higher than reported on Wednesday 58,097 cases. According to the latest data from the Federal Ministry of Health, the number of active cases has also increased, reaching 285,401. At the same time, the number of Omicron cases increased significantly, reaching 2,630.
According to the Ministry of Health, active cases are less than 1%, accounting for 0.81% of the total number of confirmed infections in the country.
According to Balram Bhargava, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Omicron is currently the main strain in India. “Mass gatherings should be avoided to reduce the speed of this spread,” he suggested at a briefing by the Ministry of Health the night before.
