Delhi’s air quality in ‘very poor’ category, partly overcast weather expected
Delhi’s air quality was in the “very poor” category on Wednesday morning as partly overcast weather is expected with moderate to dense fog early in the day. According to Central Pollution Control Board, the hourly Air Quality Index (AQI) was 340 at 7 am.
On Tuesday, the 24-hour average AQI was 346, in the “very poor” category, with pollutants PM 2.5 and PM 10 particulate matter. AQIs between 0 and 50 are considered “good”, 51 and 100 are considered “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, 401 and 500 “severe”.
On Tuesday, the Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research System said air quality could improve to the low end of the “very poor” category on Thursday. “The AQI indicates ‘very poor’ air quality and the conditions are likely to be the same on both days as weather conditions are unlikely to change significantly. Rain gusts are likely on February 3 and 4, expected to pass Wet deposition and strong dispersion improved the AQI to the ‘extremely poor lower bound’ or ‘poor’.” It said that air quality may gradually decline from February 5, as pollutants are expected to accumulate faster than ventilation.
Wednesday could see a low of 8C and a high of 21C. On Tuesday, the low was 7C, 1C below normal, and the high was 20.8C.
