Egis in JV wins Dhaka Metro Rail corridor contract
Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited has awarded design contracts for Consortium of Aegis, SMEC, and OCG for Line-5 South for Dhaka Metro Rail Project.
The scope of work includes the construction of a 17.4 km long corridor comprising an elevated section of 4.6 km from Aftabnagar center to Balirpar and 12.8 km of the underground section from Gabatoli to Aftabnagar west with 14 stations along the route.
The Dhaka Metro is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges.
Upon completion, the line will have a daily ride of approximately one lakh passengers and the travel time between Gabtoli and Balirpar will be reduced to 30 minutes.
The project, which is expected to be completed in three years, is divided into three separate phases, reviewing and revising feasibility studies over the course of nine months.
The contract covers the detailed design of civil engineering and systems for fifteen months and assists in the evaluation of bids and the selection of builders.
As per the terms and conditions of the contract, Aegis will be in charge of project management, architecture and technical trades for all stations, civil engineering for underground stations, and the design of almost all rail systems.
Currently, work is underway on Dhaka Metro Line-6 from Uttarakhand Terminal to Kamalapur Railway Station with a length of 20.1 km, which is expected to be operational next year.
This is Aegi’s’ first contract in Bangladesh and the company is already involved in several infrastructure projects in India, including metro projects in Chennai, Kolkata, Nagpur, and Kochi.
