Facebook confronts Senators furious about Instagram’s risks

The head of global security at Facebook Inc. faces sharp questions from legislators who accuse the company of putting profits and growth above the health of its youngest users.

At the hearing on Thursday, the senators captured Facebook’s internal research on the mental health impact of its platform, arguing that the social media giant cannot act in the best interests of children and teenagers. Senator Richard Blumenthal (Richard Blumenthal) stated that Facebook “chooses growth over children’s mental health and happiness, and greed rather than preventing children’s suffering.”

Blumenthal, chairman of the Consumer Protection Panel of the Senate Commerce Committee, said: “Facebook has once again shown us that it is unable to hold itself accountable.”

Antigone Davis, Facebook’s head of global security, said the company uses its own research and collaborates with external experts to develop tools to ensure the safety of young users on its platform, provide parents with more security options, and prevent people under 13 from falsely reporting age. Create an account. “That’s why we conducted this research: to make our platform better, minimize the disadvantages, maximize the benefits, and proactively determine where we can improve,” Davis said. “Facebook is committed to creating better products for young people and doing everything we can to protect their privacy, safety and well-being on our platform.”
