Finally some good news from Bengaluru: Covid trends show a decline after topping all metros

In the past week, Bengaluru has reported the highest number of new cases among the top five metropolitan areas in India, including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai.

On Monday, the city recorded 3,992 cases, the highest at five. This was also reflected in the test positivity rate, which, despite the decline, was recorded at 9.03%, as reported by the Brihat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) COVID-19 War Room Bulletin.

The test positivity rate is calculated as the ratio of positivity in the samples tested and gives an indication of whether sufficient tests are being conducted.

As in many other cities across the country, at the peak of the second wave, a wave of hospitalizations overwhelmed the city’s health infrastructure. At the time, many hospitals were also facing severe oxygen shortages.

Three weeks later, cases are declining in other metropolitan areas.

Bengaluru recorded the highest number of positive cases, deaths in a day and total active cases on Monday, according to various municipal and state bulletins. As of May 31, the total number of active cases in the city stood at 1,46,043 and the death toll in 24 hours was 242.

Bengaluru was followed by Chennai, which had 2,596 cases, 91 deaths and a total of 33,922 active cases. Kolkata recorded 1,324 cases, 28 deaths and a total of 12,104 active cases.

While Mumbai recorded 676 cases, 29 deaths, and 22,390 total active cases, Delhi recorded even fewer cases with 648, 11,040 total active cases, and 86 deaths.
