‘Glad to see three farm bills in India will be repealed’: US lawmaker

US Congressman Andy Levine welcomed India’s repeal of three agricultural laws. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that the government has decided to repeal the three agricultural laws that have become the center of farmers’ protests in the past year and called on protesting farmers to return to their homes. “It is great to see that after more than a year of protests, India’s three farm bills will be repealed,” Congressman Andy Levine said on Friday.

“This proves that when workers are united, they can defeat corporate interests and make progress-in India and around the world,” he said in a tweet. Prime Minister Modi, speaking to the country on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, insisted that the law is beneficial to farmers, and then apologized to the people of the country, adding that the government could not persuade some farmers.

Since November 2020, hundreds of farmers have been camping at the three borders of Delhi, requesting the government to repeal the Farmers’ Agricultural Products Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act of 2020; Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement Price in 2020 The Guarantee and Farm Services Act; and the Basic Goods (Amendment) Act of 2020.

They also asked for a new law to guarantee minimum support prices (MSP) for crops. The center held 11 rounds of formal dialogues with farmers, insisting that the new law is beneficial to farmers, while protesters claimed that because of the legislation, they would be at the mercy of the company.
