Jharkhand govt, BRO meet to streamline worker recruitment

The government of Jharkhand and the Border Road Organization (BRO) recently held a meeting to break the deadlock in the past year and a half since the state’s migrant workers allegedly discriminated against the latter. Some of the main recommendations at the meeting were: set up an agency to recruit workers from Dumka, and set up a safe and responsible immigration initiative center in Ladakh, which will provide support to immigrant workers from the state and the BRO.

The minutes of the meeting held on October 29 were signed on November 17 by Prawin Topno, Minister of Labor of Jharkhand. “In the discussion, most stakeholders agreed that the current worker recruitment system is not transparent and is based on’partners’.

Most workers are not aware of their rights… Therefore, they are easily manipulated …BRO as the main employer should be aware of the conditions faced by these “state builders.” However, the BRO suggested that the Jharkhand government should appoint a labor recruitment agency and notify the BRO,” the meeting minutes said.

Partners are intermediaries involved in coordinating the supply of labor. Jharkhand also asked the BRO to share a complete database of migrant workers who died on duty in the past two years and compensation paid to their families.
