Harry Potter: When director assigned the cast homework and Emma outshone Daniel

When the Harry Potter movie started, the three main actors—Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint—were still underage. No wonder that some of the early directors treated them like children. In the 20th anniversary special edition of “Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts”, the actors revealed what happened when director Alfonso Cuarón assigned them homework on the set of the third film.

The first two films of the franchise were directed by Christopher Columbus, and Mexican film producer Alfonso Cuarón joined in 2003 to direct the third film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The actor revealed that in order to understand the actors and their understanding of the characters, he actually assigned them homework. Daniel Radcliffe recalled, “He wanted to know us, so he set up this exercise and let us write an article about characters.” His co-star Rupert Grint added, “He’s like, you’re better than me now Knowing these characters better, I will never understand who they are, so you tell me.”

However, the three protagonists—Daniel, Rupert, and Emma—take a very different approach to their mission. Daniel recalled, “After about half of the A4 (size paper), I thought,’Yes, I cover almost everything. I mean Joan (JK Rowling) has written 500 pages about this, but I I think this article almost sums up this point. It’s great!’ I’m proud of it and brought it in.” However, to his surprise, Emma—faithful to her as a hardworking Hermione Character-beyond him. “Of course, Emma wrote 12 pages, beautifully written,” Rupert said. Director Alfonso Cuarón said that each of the three actors wrote this article as their role did, so much so that Rupert Grint didn’t even submit his work. “Rupert didn’t provide anything. I said, ‘Where is Rupert your mission?” He said, ‘I thought Ron wouldn’t do it’,” he said with a smile. The 20th anniversary of Harry Potter’s special return to Hogwarts began on the afternoon of January 1st on Amazon Prime Video in India. It marked two decades of the release of the first film in the franchise.
