Health workers wearing protective gear as a measure against the Covid-19 coronavirus walk down a street in Jing’an district in Shanghai

Shanghai is in its third day of  lockdown as part of an effort to stop the virus spreading. The city’s financial and industrial district of Pudong is the centre of a mass lockdown.

Residents in the east have been locked down since Monday. Locking down a major metropolis like Shanghai full-scale would result in a 4% reduction in the national real gross domestic product.

On Wednesday Shanghai reported a record 5,656 asymptomatic COVID cases and 326 symptomatic cases for March 29. Several residents living in western districts on Tuesday received notice from their housing committees that they would be stopped from leaving their compounds for the next seven days.

Public transport has been suspended in the southwestern district of Minhang, home to more than 2.5 million people, until April 5.

Yahya Sinwar of Hamas is shown in an IDF video avoiding a drone just before he dies.

The Israeli Defence Forces released footage from a drone capturing Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar before his death in a firefight against Israeli troops in Gaza’s Rafah. The video depicts a man, presumably Sinwar, sitting on a dust-covered armchair, attempting to throw a stick at a drone, but misses.

The IDF confirmed the deaths of two other “terrorists” including Yahya Sinwar, who became Hamas chief after Ismail Haniyeh’s death in July 2024 and is believed to have orchestrated the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Israel and its allies, the US and France, celebrated the death of Sinwar, with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stating that evil has been dealt a blow, but the task remains unfinished. U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller referred to Sinwar as the primary obstacle to ending the war and expressed optimism for further progress in the peace process.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed hope for the return of hostages following the death of the political head of a militant organisation. Iran predicts Sinwar’s death will fuel further resistance against Israel, while Hezbollah plans to transition to a new, escalating phase in their confrontation with Israel.
