‘I just ran towards Virat and hugged him’: Siraj recalls ‘best surprise of life’

Virat Kohli deserves credit for changing the game of Indian fast bowling. As well as playing a small role in shaping mature bowlers, Kohli also debuted young pacesetters like Mohammed Siraj. The young pacesetter has played a few T20Is but his impressive performances in the IPL paved the way for his India debut in the MCG Test at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020. The rest, as they say, is history. Siraj has been one of the biggest assets of Indian cricket in 2021.

Siraj has a lot of respect for Kohli, and rightly so. The 27-year-old pacesetter is recounting an incident at Virat Kohli during the 2018 IPL when a gesture from the former RCB captain brought him to the ground. “I invited everyone from RCB to my house for dinner. I went straight home from the hotel. When I called him (Virat) he said: ‘My back is stiff, miyan, I can’t come. “I told him to rest. What more can I say,” Siraj said on the RCB podcast.

“But when everyone came, I saw him get out of the car. Everyone was there, PP (Parthiv Patel) Bhai, Chahal Bhai. I just ran up to Bhaiya (Virat) and hugged him. This is me Best surprise of my life. Because Bhaiya (Virat) said he would not come. Virat Kohli coming to Toli Chowki is new.”

Photos of Kohli and other RCB teammates enjoying Biryani at Siraj’s home in Hyderabad went viral. Siraj posted the photo on his Instagram handle with the caption: “My family and I are honored to welcome you all. Thank you for taking the time to have dinner with us. It really means a lot .”

Siraj is one of three players RCB has retained for Rs 8 crore ahead of the 2022 IPL season.
