Kejriwal urges caution: Covid cases up but no lockdown if you wear mask

There will be no Covid lockdown in Delhi if people follow protocol – wear face masks in public and maintain social distancing – Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Sunday, as the national capital scrambles to contain a frightening surge in new cases over the past few days.
“No need to panic… be responsible. We don’t want to enforce a lockdown right now… we want to keep curbs as limited as possible, so the common man is not affected. Tomorrow there is a DDMA (Delhi Disaster Management Agency) meeting, and we will review the situation again,” he said.

Today’s message was a repeat of what Mr Kejriwal said last week, when he said Covid cases were rising rapidly in the city but there was no need to panic.

The Chief Minister also urged people to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Mr Kejriwal also announced that he had recovered after a Covid infection picked up while campaigning for next month’s Uttarakhand election. “I am back at your service after recovering from Corona,” he said, adding that he had self-isolated at home after having a two-day fever.

Mr Kejriwal’s entreaties come as Delhi is expected to report around 22,000 Covid cases today.

The city reported 20,181 yesterday – an increase of 16 per cent. Daily new cases are also creeping closer to the single-day record of 26,169 set on April 23, during the peak of the second wave.

The new wave of infections is partly fuelled by the Omicron variant, which is more infectious than the Delta strain. It leads to milder symptoms, but doctors have warned against underestimating it.

Delhi has reported 513 Omicron Covid cases so far (second only to Maharashtra).

Experts say the milder symptoms produced can be offset by the sheer number of cases that will be reported, which could put excessive pressure on healthcare infrastructure.

In addition, over 300 doctors and medical professionals have tested positive in Delhi in this wave.

On Saturday Health Minister Satyendar Jain said the Delhi government had decided to increase the number of available hospital beds (normal and ICU) in anticipation of more cases.

5,650 normal beds and 2,075 ICU beds in 14 hospitals, as well as 2,800 in Covid centres, would be added to those already available, he said, noting that around 13,300 beds were available overall.

“Delhi government is ready to deal with the most serious situation. Delhi’s health system is fully prepared to prevent this wave and provide timely treatment to all people of the state,” he said.

As part of its efforts to contain the third wave in the city, the Delhi government ordered a weekend curfew that kicked in at 10 pm on Friday and will remain in effect till 5 am tomorrow.

During this time only those involved in essential services and those facing an emergency situation can leave home. Travellers must produce e-passes issued by the government or have valid ID cards.

India this morning reported nearly 1.6 lakh new cases in the previous 24 hours.

Who is Harun Abdul-Malik Yener? Florida man arrested over bomb threat to New York Stock Exchange

FBI arrested Harun Abdul-Malik Yener for allegedly planning a bombing at the NYSE to “reset” the US government.

Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, a South Florida resident, has been arrested by the FBI for allegedly plotting to bomb the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as part of a plan to “reset” or “reboot” the U.S. government. According to unsealed court documents, Yener faces charges of attempting to use an improvised explosive device (IED) against a “building used in interstate or foreign commerce.”

The investigation into Yener began in February when the FBI received a tip about his possession of bomb-making plans stored in a locked Coral Springs storage unit. Upon executing a search warrant, agents discovered “bomb-making sketches, numerous watches with timers, electronic circuit boards, and other electronics” that could be used to construct explosives, per the criminal complaint.

Court documents reveal that Yener was not only active on YouTube, posting videos on making explosives and fireworks, but also had a history of making threats.

Harun Abdul-Malik Yener wanted to ‘reset’ US government

Back in March, Yener admitted to undercover federal agents that he had experience in creating “rockets” and “bombs” and had previously sought to join a “domestic extremist group.” He also revealed that in 2015, he had considered travelling to Iraq to join ISIS but ultimately decided against it, doubting the group’s ability to accomplish “their objectives.”

Yener also attempted to join extremist groups such as the Boogaloo Bois and the Proud Boys but was reportedly denied membership due to his stated desire to “pursue martyrdom.”

Yener allegedly shared his plot to attack the NYSE with an undercover FBI agent, identifying November 18 as his intended date for the bombing. He wanted to “reboot” or “reset” US government through the “bombing”.

“There is one place that would be hella easy… the stock exchange, that would be a great hit. Tons of people would support it. They would see it and think, dude, this guy makes sense, they are [profanity] robbing us. So that’s perfect,” he told the undercover agent.

On November 12, Yener reportedly made several audio recordings he planned to send to NBC News following the attack. He expressed his vision of the explosion as being comparable to a nuclear event, saying, “I feel like Bin Laden.” He allegedly added that the detonation would ensure “[a]nything outside” the building “will be wiped out” and “anything inside there would be killed.”

Following his arrest, Yener made his first court appearance and remains in custody as he awaits trial.
