Lawmaker to introduce bill to make Diwali federal holiday in US

Congressman Caroline Maloney will introduce a bill in the U.S. Congress to designate Diwali as a federal holiday in the United States. On Wednesday, the Democratic House of Representatives from New York will present her legislation on Capitol Hill with members of the Indian caucus including Rep. Ro Khanna, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi and other advocates.

Sanjeev Joshipura, Executive Director of Indiaspora, represents members of the Indian-American community and will also join the ranks of women members of Congress who have long supported the Indian diaspora. If the bill is approved, federal agencies will celebrate this holiday, with a large population celebrating Diwali and respecting the cultural heritage of the millions of Indian Americans who celebrate the holiday in the United States.

Congressman Maloney has successfully worked with advocates across the country in the past and led Congress’ efforts to urge the U.S. Postal Service to approve and issue a commemorative stamp commemorating Diwali, which has been in circulation since 2016. Maloney has worked tirelessly for this cause, and she believes that “a relatively small operation is of great significance to millions of people.”
