No increase in human rights violations, says Centre, cites NHRC data

The government told Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that there has been no increase in human rights violations in the country.

“According to the data provided by the National Human Rights Commission, no increase in human rights violations has been noticed,” State Minister Nityanand Rai of the Ministry of the Interior said in a written response to a question from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP M Shanmugam.

Shanmugam wants to know whether the number of human rights violations in the country is increasing year by year.

According to data shared by the government, as of October 31, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered 64,170 human rights violations this year. The data shows that the number of registered cases has declined in the past three years. The number of registered cases in 2018, 2019 and 2020 are 89,584,76,628 and 74,968 respectively. The largest proportion of cases registered by the National Human Rights Commission is from Uttar Pradesh. In 2018, 41,947 cases were registered, and 32,6193,4022 cases were registered in 2018. From 2021 to October 31, 24,242 cases were registered.
