Review of the film No Bears from IFFK 2022: Despite hardship, Jafar Panahi continues to produce radical art.

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been making films since the early 1990s, and his work has been both acclaimed and censored by the Iranian government. His most recent film, No Bears, was screened at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in 2022.

No Bears is a short film about a young girl named Narges who lives in a small village in Iran. Narges is bored with her life and decides to run away from home. She ends up in the city, where she meets a man named Jafar. Jafar is a street performer who uses a bear costume to entertain children.

Narges is fascinated by Jafar and his world of make-believe. She begins to see him as a father figure, and the two of them form a deep bond. However, their relationship is threatened when the authorities discover that Jafar is actually a wanted man.

Despite the hardships he faces, Jafar continues to make art. He uses his bear costume to make a political statement, and he continues to entertain children. No Bears is a beautiful and moving film about the power of art to transcend adversity.
