Ropeways – Alternative Mobility Solution in Urban India

India got its first mode of modern transport in 1853 when the first railway line was laid from Bombay to Thane to promote industrial activities and ensure easy access to heavy raw materials.

In later years, construction of steam-powered railways, narrow-gauge trains and material ropeways etc. was prohibited to improve the infrastructure in the area and create routes for movement of raw materials.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) was formulated in 1942 to increase mobility and efficiency of transport in the country, and thereby facilitate basic development across the country.

Entrusted with such enormous responsibility, this apex body has come a long way since its founding 79 years, during which it has distributed numerous highways, expressways and elevated corridors.

Now, as we move towards adopting an environmentally friendly, new-age transport system, the recent announcement to bring Ropeway under MoRTH will encourage the practice and installation of innovative mobility solutions in India.
