US court rejects Donald Trump’s bid to keep Jan 6 Capitol riot documents secret

The U.S. Court of Appeals on Thursday rejected former President Donald Trump’s attempt to prevent the White House from publishing records related to the January 6th Capitol attack.

The appellate court agreed with the lower court’s ruling that President Joe Biden can waive his administrative privileges on records in order to transfer these records to a congressional team investigating violence by Trump supporters.

Trump is accused of inciting an attack on the U.S. Congress. He tried to exercise his privileges as a former president to keep confidential documents and phone records that may be related to the attack.

However, the court said that Biden’s decision has greater weight in this case.

The Court of Appeal stated in its ruling: “Of course the rights of the former president will not be more important than the rights of the current president.”

“In this case, President Biden, as the head of the executive branch, particularly found that Congress has proven the urgent need for these documents and that disclosure is in the country’s best interests,” the court said. The ruling is indeed the case. Will not trigger the immediate release of the record. The appeals court stated that Trump’s lawyers will have two weeks to appeal to the Supreme Court.

There, when this unprecedented case is reviewed in the High Court, Trump’s lawyers are expected to demand another freeze and release.

“Regardless of the appeals court’s decision today, this case is always destined to be submitted to the Supreme Court,” said Trump spokeswoman Liz Harrington.

“President Trump’s responsibilities to defend the Constitution and the Office of the President continue. He will continue to fight for every American and every future government.”

The appeals court stated that the public interest related to the records kept by the National Archives outweighs Trump’s own interests.
