As polls for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh parliamentary elections begin, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati said on Thursday that it is time to decide whether people want a “sad” state or protect their interests in the next five years the state for many years.

BSP leaders also warmly welcomed all voters in the first phase of voting, which includes 58 parliamentary constituencies in 11 districts in western Uttar Pradesh.

Voting for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh elections for 58 parliamentary seats covering 11 districts in the state began at 7am this morning. Voting will close at 6pm today.

The first phase will cover the “Jat Dominant Belt” in the western part of the state.

The districts going to the polls today are Mathura, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahar, Hapur, Shamli, Baghpat, Aligarh, Agra, and Gautam Buddha Nagar.

As many as 623 candidates compete in the first stage of parliamentary voting, with nearly 227 million voters set to decide their fate.

The 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly is scheduled to vote in seven stages on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, March 3 and 7. Counting will take place on March 10.
