Will favourably consider: Pakistan PM Imran Khan on wheat from India to Kabul

More than a month after India and Pakistan delivered food to Afghanistan by land, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan told the Taliban delegation in Islamabad on Friday that his country would “actively consider” the “Afghan brothers” transportation request. Wheat from India passes through Pakistan “under special circumstances.” The source told the “India Express” that in view of the approaching winter and the “emergency” in Afghanistan, a dialogue on these models is ongoing.

A statement from Khan’s office said: “The Prime Minister stated that under the current circumstances, Pakistan will actively consider the request of the Afghan brothers to transport wheat from India through Pakistan, and provide it under special circumstances for humanitarian purposes and in a manner to be formulated. .” The statement was issued after the Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mutaqi met with Khan, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Industry and Commerce of the organization, and senior members of the delegation.

A statement from the Pakistan Project Office stated that Khan “reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Afghanistan and the Afghan people in overcoming the severe challenges facing their country.” India issued a note verbale to Pakistan in the first week of October, allowing trucks carrying 50,000 metric tons of wheat to be shipped to Afghanistan. Winter is approaching, the financial crisis has paralyzed Afghanistan, and it is believed that the country is about to face food shortages.

Some countries, such as China and Turkey, have already started distributing food to Afghans. According to sources, India, which has a lot of goodwill among the Afghan people, also wants to do its part. Officials stated that the task of transporting 50,000 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan would require the delivery of 5,000 trucks through Pakistan. Islamabad is studying the proposal, but it is said to have pointed out the need to determine the size of trucks and roads.
