‘If that happens to kill somebody…’: UK expert’s warning over Omicron variant
Amid global concerns about Omicron variants, the UK’s top epidemiologists warn people not to assume that the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) will evolve into a milder infection. According to the British “Guardian” report, Neil Ferguson, head of the disease outbreak analysis and modeling team at Imperial College London, told British MPs that the threat posed by the Omicron variant will not be clear until the end of December.
“The virus is concerned about rapid replication in the respiratory tract and entering the environment. If it happens to kill someone after 10 days, then the virus really doesn’t care,” said Ferguson, who influenced the response of governments around the world through the original Covid-19 model.
As the uncertainty of the new B.1.1.529 variant increases, Omicron has prompted countries around the world to tighten travel restrictions. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that because the highly spread Deta variant is still the main global variant, the global availability of vaccines is unfair and overall vaccine coverage is low.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “Globally, our vaccine coverage rate is low, and the detection rate is extremely low-this is the secret of reproduction and amplification of mutations.” “We need to use existing tools to prevent Spread and save lives from Delta Air Lines. If we do, we will also prevent spread and save Omicron’s lives,” he added. At the same time, the United States has confirmed its first case of Omicron variant among travelers who recently returned from South Africa. Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top infectious disease expert in the United States, said that the passenger returned from South Africa on November 22 and had been vaccinated against the new coronavirus. All contacts tested negative.
Fauci said: “We feel good, this patient not only has mild symptoms, but actually seems to be improving.”
