Jio TV and Jio tablet may launch in India next year, suggests new leak

Reliance Jio may be developing its first smart TV and tablet. The telecommunications company recently launched an entry-level Android phone called Jio Phone Next, and plans to expand its product portfolio with more affordable devices. Jio is likely to target the entry-level market of the Indian TV and tablet market, which means it will compete with brands such as Redmi, Realme, Motorola and Nokia that sell TVs and tablets at the same time at very competitive prices.

According to a report from 91Mobiles, Reliance Jio plans to launch tablets and TVs sometime next year, but the specific timetable is unclear. Reliance Jio may announce upcoming products at the next annual shareholders meeting. In the past, Reliance’s AGM was where the company’s new products (such as Jio Phone Next) came out of the shell.

Jio’s first TV has no official name yet, but some people speculate that it will be called Jio TV. According to reports, it will be equipped with smart features, such as pre-installed OTT applications. It is unclear whether this TV is based on Android TV or Google TV, but there will definitely be some Android branches. Reliance Jio is already working with Google to develop PragatiOS, a customized version of Android that supports Jio Phone Next. The report mentioned that Jio’s first TV may be part of the Jio Fiber connection bundle, which already includes a set-top box service for subscribers.

On the other hand, Jio tablets are likely to use PragatiOS software. Reliance Jio may wish to extend the implementation of the software to devices other than smartphones, but considering the different display sizes and use cases, this requires some adjustments. Since PragatiOS is a joint effort of Jio and Google, the tablet will come with the Google Play store, which means that all applications customized for the tablet can be downloaded. According to reports, Jio tablets may use entry-level Qualcomm processors. It is not yet clear about other functions, such as the camera and display.

The main takeaway of the new development is that Jio is strengthening its cooperation with Google through its upcoming products. Google has set its sights on the untapped customer base in India who needs low-end products, and Jio is its way to reach them. After Jio Phone Next, Jio tablets and Jio TVs will surely shake the market, especially if the company decides to bundle them with existing services. Free use of Jio’s services, such as Jio TV and Jio Books, will increase the adoption rate of upcoming products.
