Meta Plans to Launch Smartwatch With Camera as Competitor to Apple Watch, Leaked Photo Shows

Meta Platforms, a company formerly known as Facebook, is developing a smart watch with a front camera and a round screen, based on device images found in an iPhone app by the tech giant. This photo shows a watch with slightly curved edges on the screen and case.

The front camera-similar to what you see on a smartphone-appears at the bottom of the display, with a watch control button on the right. The image was found in an application that the company used to control the new smart glasses launched in collaboration with Ray-Ban. The image was found by app developer Steve Moser and shared with Bloomberg News. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment.

The watch has a detachable wrist strap, and there appears to be a button on the top of the case. Its large display mimics the style of the Apple Watch—rather than the more basic fitness trackers sold by Google’s Fitbit and Garmin. The camera indicates that the product may be used for video conferencing, and this feature will make Meta’s equipment stand out. Apple’s smart watches do not have cameras, nor do competitors’ products such as Samsung.

According to people familiar with the matter, Facebook plans to launch its first watch as early as 2022, but has not yet made a final decision on the timing, and the debut may be later. The person said that the company is developing three generations of products for different release time frames.

The device in the image may ultimately represent a version that has never been released, but it is the first evidence of the company’s work on the project. The Verge previously reported on Facebook’s watch plans, saying that these devices may also include heart rate monitors.
