On Rahul Gandhi’s ‘China-Pakistan are closer’ remarks, US says ‘won’t endorse’
Congress President Rahul Gandhi said in his congressional speech that China-Pakistan relations are closer because of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s policies in the center, and State Department spokesman Ned Price said he ” will not support” these policies. Comment.
“I will let Pakistan and China talk about their relationship,” Price further said at the news conference.
Gandhi’s remarks were slammed by Union ministers, with foreign minister S Jaishankar saying he needed some “lessons from history”. Jaishankar also said Pakistan illegally handed over the Shaksgam valley to China in 1963, when the Congress government was in power.
“Rahul Gandhi claimed in the Lok Sabha that it was this government that brought Pakistan and China together. Perhaps, some historical lessons make sense: Pakistan illegally handed over the Shaksgam valley to China in 1963. China built Pakistan Karakoram Highway, through PoK. 1970s,” Jaishankar said in a tweet on Wednesday.
Jaishankar scoffed at Gandhi’s frequent visits, and further said that “everyone living in India knows we are in the midst of a Covid-19 pandemic”, adding that India held a virtual summit with the presidents of five Central Asian countries.
Jaishankar asked Rahul Gandhi if he also missed the India-Central Asia summit on January 27.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi called Gandhi a “confused and stupid” leader who was totally “complimenting” on China.
Responding to a debate on President Ram Nath Kovind’s speech in parliament, Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that the government has united China and Pakistan.
“The Chinese have a very clear vision of what they want to do. The biggest strategic goal of Indian foreign policy is to keep Pakistan and China apart. What you do is bring them together,” he said.
“Don’t have any illusions, don’t underestimate the power standing in front of you. You unite Pakistan and China. This is the greatest crime you can commit against the Indian people,” he added.
