The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences invited actor Suriya to join the Oscars committee on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Suriya ‘humbly’ accepted the invitation through Twitter. Suriya has become the first actor from the south of India to be asked to the Oscars committee, thanks to the success of his most recent films, Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim.

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweeted the names of the 397 artists who had been asked to join the Academy’s Class of 2022. Suriyas was among them. After a clip from Suriya’s Tamil courtroom drama Jai Bhim (2021) was posted on the Oscars’ Youtube account under the category “Scene at the Academy,” Suriya received an invitation. Suriya thanked The Academy for the invitation and promised to work hard to make everyone proud, quoting the tweet.
